The CSChE 2018 organizing committee is proud to announce the 3-Minute Pitch Competition session, which will consist of an Elevator Pitch as well as a Business Pitch component.
The competition follows the spirit of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT)® competition that originated at The University of Queensland. This session is an opportunity for graduate students to showcase the innovation and impact of their research, as well as their innovative chemical engineering business ideas, to a wider audience of the chemical engineering community. It is open to all graduate students.
Participants have 3 minutes or less to present their Elevator Pitch or Business Pitch to a panel of non-specialist judges. The challenge is to present complex technical information in an engaging, accessible, and compelling way. The top students selected on Sunday, October 28 from each category of the competition will move on to compete in the 3-Minute Pitch Competition Finals on Tuesday, October 30.
The participant should be an MSc or PhD student (that is, officially enrolled as a graduate student as of July 1, 2018). Shortlisted participants must register for the conference by the early registration deadline of August 28, 2018 in order to secure their participation in the 3-Minute Pitch Competition.
Graduate students interested in this competition need to submit an abstract to the 3-Minute Pitch Competition session of CSChE 2018. Abstracts should be written in layman terms. An Elevator Pitch abstract should address the problem that the research project aims to solve, the participant’s contributions, and the significance of these contributions. Similarly, a Business Pitch abstract should address the business idea, the problem that it aims to solve, and its potential impact. Shortlisted candidates will be notified to participate in the 3-Minute Pitch Competition after the abstract submission deadline.
Rules for the Competition (more details will be sent to shortlisted candidates)
- Participants will present to the judging panel in an open forum
- Each participant has a maximum of 3 minutes to present
- Only one static powerpoint slide is permitted per presentation
- The competition will be in English
Participants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- The topic of research (Elevator Pitch), or merit of the business idea (Business Pitch)
- Innovation and novelty
- Design of research project (Elevator Pitch), or scalability of the business strategy (Business Pitch)
- Accessibility of presentation, audience engagement, and communication style
- Relevance and potential impact to chemical engineering industry
The participants from the initial round who are selected as finalists will be provided tailored feedback on their presentations, thus enabling them to make a more effective pitch for the final round.
Finalists will deliver their pitches in front of a larger audience and a judging panel at the 3-Minute Pitch Competition Finals on Tuesday, October 30.
The judging panel will be composed of the session chair and five other members (including two graduate students) from universities internationally.
Abstract Submission Deadline
The abstract submission deadline is 11:59pm EDT on June 18, 2018. Submit your abstract to the 3-Minute Pitch Competition. After abstract screening, all shortlisted candidates will be notified. Shortlisted participants who have not registered for the conference by the early registration deadline of August 28, 2018 will be automatically removed.
